Quick Tip: How to Setup D-Link Motion Detection

Posted by on in Camera Reviews and Tips

D-Link IP cameras have a great set of features for motion detection but they can be a bit tricky to setup for first-time users. There are also a few minor but potentially confusing “gotchas” that all users should be aware of when setting up motion detection on a D-Link. This post recaps the required settings, outlines the gotchas and offers a few workarounds.

D-Link DCS-2332L Review

Posted by on in Camera Reviews and Tips

DCS-2332 ThumbnailThis is part of our continuing series of IP camera reviews. The reviews focus on cameras that work with Camcloud's IP camera cloud services. Hopefully this will help customers pick the camera that's right for them.

For this post I will review the D-Link DCS-2332L. This is one of D-Link's outdoor cameras and a model we get asked about regularly. D-Link is obviously a well known brand and they make good quality IP cameras (read our previous review of the DCS-942L). I was interested to try this camera and see how it stacks-up against other outdoor cameras. They aren't cheap -- they are priced at $250+ dollars on Amazon at the time of this writing.

I'll review the camera's Hardware & Video Quality, the mydlink Service, and its Monitoring Features.

Introducing New 12 and 3 Month Pre-Pay Plans

Posted by on in Camcloud News
Today we're introducing all-new pre-pay options that allow our customers to save money on their Camcloud subscriptions. Here are the details.
  • 12 Month plan allows customers to save 25% on their subscription. This is an annual plan, so next year's renewal will be for another 12 months.
  • 3 Month pre-pay option allows monthly plan customers to save 15%. At the end of the 3 month pre-pay period, you will be automatically switched to a regular monthly plan.
  • Pre-pay options are available for all 3 plans -- Basic, Standard and Premium.
  • New and existing customers can take advantage of these savings. If you're an existing customer, just upgrade as you normally would from your My Account page. On checkout you will see new pre-pay options.
Here's a short FAQ to answer some questions you might have.

1. If I'm an existing customer, how do I take advantage of these savings?
If you want to upgrade your plan to a pre-pay option for a different plan (e.g. Basic Plan to Standard Plan), simply follow the standard upgrade options from your My Account page. If you want to stay on the same plan but take advantage of pre-pay savings, then you need to cancel your plan (on the Billings Page) then upgrade from the My Account page - and don't worry, your existing camera settings will be maintained through the cancel process, so no need to re-add your cameras.

2. Are there any restrictions on what plan and/or pre-pay options I can select?
No, there are no restrictions. If you're unsure just contact support@camcloud.com.

3. Will Camcloud calculate a pro-rated price depending on where I am in my billing cycle?
Pro-rated amounts are automatically calculated when moving from a plan with no pre-pay to another plan with no pre-pay. Similarly, if you upgrade from a 12 Month plan to another 12 Month plan, a pro-rated value will be calculated. For other upgrade scenarios, your new plan will simply over-ride your previous plan with no pro-rated amount.

4. Ok, sounds good. How do I take advantage of these options?
Existing customers, just Login and upgrade from your My Account page. New customers can checkout our plans and pricing page -- pre-pay options will be presented at checkout.

If you're unsure about how to take advantage of these options, just post a comment below or email support@camcloud.com -- we're here to help!

Quick Tip: Tuning your Foscam Motion Detection

Posted by on in Camera Reviews and Tips

If you're using your IP camera as a monitoring tool that's saving videos (or images) when motion takes place, then you will want to spend some time adjusting your camera's motion detection settings. This means ensuring the available settings are optimized for the particular scene where motion needs to be captured. If you don't adjust these settings, you'll probably be left with a large amount of recordings that can make it difficult or tedious to review at a later date (not to mention the increased storage and bandwidth costs).

Most IP cameras provide some decent settings that allow you to customize what triggers motion and a subsequent recording. Here's a simple example that shows you how to tune a Foscam FI9821P to capture people approaching a front step.

Wanscam JW0016 Review

Posted by on in Camera Reviews and Tips

Wanscam JW0016This is part of our continuing series of IP camera reviews. The reviews focus on cameras that work with Camcloud's IP camera cloud services. Hopefully this will help customers pick the camera that's right for them.

For this post I will review the Wanscam JW0016. Wanscam is one of the growing number of low-cost IP camera manufacturers competing for your attention. What I find interesting about Wanscam is they have a pretty good selection of cost-effective outdoor cameras, some for as low as $60-$70 on Amazon.com. I was eager to try this camera to see how it stacks-up against other low-cost outdoor cameras. Many customers are looking for outdoor cameras so I think it's a good approach for Wanscam to offer a range of options.

I'll review the camera's Hardware, Basic Setup, Video Quality, and Monitoring Features.

Hardware

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and feel of the camera hardware. Most inexpensive IP cameras come with fairly low quality housing. The Wanscam JW0016 is an exception -- it has a sturdy outdoor housing and the size of the camera is great. It's not too bulky like most outdoor bullet cams -- frankly most outdoor cameras I've seen tend to be quite large. So, definite plus on that front. The rest of the package was fairly straightforward -- an antenna, power cables (including POE) and some screws to mount the device. Ok, let's see how the camera performed functionality-wise.

Tenvis JPT3815W Review

Posted by on in Camera Reviews and Tips

b2ap3_thumbnail_3815w.jpgThis is part of our continuing series of IP camera reviews. The reviews focus on cameras that work with Camcloud's IP camera cloud services. Hopefully this will help customers pick the camera that's right for them.

For this post I will review the Tenvis JPT3815W. Tenvis is a low-cost provider of IP cameras. I was eager to try this camera to see how it stacks-up against other low-cost MJPEG cameras, in particular from Foscam. The price certainly is right -- I bought it for $47.99 USD. Amazon.com stocks plenty of Tenvis cameras, but once you get outside the US the options become a bit more limited but they are sold in many major markets -- here's the Tenvis list of distributors.

I'll review the camera's Hardware, Network Setup, Video Quality, and Monitoring Features.

Hardware

The contents of the box are pretty standard -- you're provided with the camera itself, a software CD, install guide and a small mounting bracket. The quality of the camera hardware is pretty low -- it feels like a budget camera, but for sub-$50, I didn't expect much more. The plastic mold isn't very rugged and wouldn't stand-up to much impact. None of this is a showstopper, but just expect a light, toy-feel to the camera. Ok, let's move on to what's important -- the camera functions.
